Who touched the thermostat?: Why NRR Is a Post-Sales Design Choice, Not a CS Scorecard
Most SaaS companies build post-sales as a thermometer: Customer Success reports the renewal number, Professional Services reports the implementation timeline and Support reports ticket volume, but nobody is built, resourced or compensated to move the number. This post argues that net revenue retention is a post-sales design choice, not a CS scorecard, and shows how CS, PS and Support each cap NRR when they are structured to report instead of act. It draws on Benchmarkit, TSIA and Gainsight research on expansion's share of new ARR, expansion CAC ratios, renewal ownership and how CS is measured. It then sets out what a thermostat design looks like for each post-sales function and how River Consultancy Group's Revenue Enablement Training, currently delivered with Younium, turns post-sales into a revenue function. Written for founder-led and PE-backed SaaS leaders.
